FAQs
Answers to your common allergy and asthma-related questions.
South Florida’s warm, humid climate means allergens are active nearly year-round. The most common triggers our patients deal with include grass and tree pollen (especially in spring), mold spores from humidity and rain, dust mites, cockroach allergens, pet dander, and stinging insects. Ragweed is also a significant fall trigger in the region. If you’re constantly sneezing, congested, or experiencing itchy eyes — South Florida’s environment may be to blame. Our board-certified allergists can pinpoint your exact triggers through comprehensive allergy testing.
Allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance — like pollen or pet dander — causing symptoms like sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. Asthma is a chronic condition affecting the airways, causing wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. The two are closely linked: allergic reactions are one of the most common asthma triggers, a condition known as allergic asthma. At Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care, we treat both — together or separately — for a complete picture of your respiratory health.
You may not need a referral to see us, and seeing an allergist sooner rather than later can make a meaningful difference. While your primary care doctor is a great first stop, an allergist offers specialized expertise in diagnosing and treating the root causes of allergies, asthma, and immune system disorders. Consider scheduling with us if your symptoms are persistent or worsening, over-the-counter medications aren’t working, you’ve had a severe allergic reaction, or you want long-term solutions rather than ongoing symptom management. Contact any of our 19 South Florida locations to get started.
The most common method is skin prick testing, where a small amount of allergen is introduced just below the surface of the skin — usually on your forearm or back. Most patients describe it as a mild scratch rather than a painful poke. Results are typically ready within 15–20 minutes. In some cases, blood testing (specific IgE testing) may be used instead or in addition. Our experienced team walks you through every step so you know exactly what to expect. The goal is answers — and a clear path to relief.
Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care accepts most major health insurance plans, including many HMO, PPO, Medicare, and Medicaid plans. Coverage varies by plan and procedure, so we recommend calling your insurance provider in advance to confirm your benefits. Our staff is also happy to help verify coverage before your appointment. You can view our accepted insurance list on our Patient Resources page, and if you have an out-of-pocket balance, our team can discuss flexible payment options with you directly.
Allergy immunotherapy — also called allergy shots or allergy drops — works by gradually exposing your immune system to increasing amounts of an allergen, reducing sensitivity over time. It’s one of the few treatments that addresses the underlying cause of allergies, not just the symptoms. We offer both subcutaneous immunotherapy (allergy shots) and sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops taken under the tongue at home). Most patients notice improvement within 6–12 months, with the full course of treatment typically lasting 3–5 years. Results can be long-lasting even after treatment ends.
Absolutely. Our board-certified physicians have extensive experience treating patients of all ages, from young children to seniors. Allergies and asthma in children can significantly affect sleep, school performance, and quality of life — and early treatment can make a real difference. We offer child-friendly allergy testing and age-appropriate treatment plans. Please note that all minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for services to be administered.
If you’re having a severe asthma attack — especially if your rescue inhaler isn’t helping — call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. For mild-to-moderate attacks, use your prescribed quick-relief (rescue) inhaler, sit upright, stay calm, and breathe slowly. Avoid your known triggers and contact your doctor as soon as possible. If you’re experiencing frequent attacks or your asthma feels poorly controlled, schedule an appointment with one of our asthma specialists. A personalized asthma action plan can help you manage symptoms and know exactly when to seek emergency care.

Yes. For patients with moderate-to-severe asthma, chronic hives, or eczema that haven’t responded well to standard treatments, biologic therapies may be an option. Our physicians are experienced in prescribing and managing biologics such as Dupixent (dupilumab), Xolair (omalizumab), and Fasenra (benralizumab), among others. These targeted treatments work by blocking specific immune pathways that drive inflammation. Schedule a consultation to find out whether a biologic is appropriate for your condition.
